Above and Beyond Missions Ministry

Definition of Missions

Missions is the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Missions as a generic term is not for an elite group of Christians who are different from the rest of us. All Christians are called to missions. We are called to spread the good news that Jesus Christ has died for our sins and been raised for our forgiveness. The location of our missionary efforts is another matter. Some have been called to live in the same town in which they were born and serve as witnesses in their hometown. Others, based on providential circumstances, might be called to move to another region of the United States and serve as witnesses there. Still others may believe that they have been called to lay aside their life in America to serve as "full-time" witnesses overseas. These are international missionaries. Riverbend Community Church believes strongly in the importance of supporting and sending international missionaries to advance the kingdom of Christ in the world. There are three primary ways in which Riverbend labors in the field of international missions. First, Riverbend portions part of their budget for the sake of overseas missions. Second, Riverbend frequently sends their own members on short-term mission trips overseas. Third, Riverbend sends men and women overseas for longer periods of time in the work of foreign missions.

Biblical Basis for Missions

Genesis 12:3, "I will bless those who bless you [Abraham], and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

Galatians 3:14, "so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith."

Matthew 28:18 - 20, "And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'"

Revelation 5:9 - 10, "And they sang a new song, saying, 'Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.'"

Honduras (May 2011)

A team of 18 Riverbenders visited Honduras in May 2011 in support of Emanuel Baptist Church in the city of Siguatepeque.
The goal of this Above & Beyond Missions venture was to assist in the church's on-going renovation project, as well as provide ministry support in other areas.  All team members were involved in the construction/renovation work, which included painting the entire facility, installation of electrical circuitry and lighting, installation of new plumbing fixtures in two bathrooms, tiling the floor in Fellowship Hall and the restrooms, tiling the walls in the restrooms, applying coating to the Fellowship Hall roof, etc.
Several of the ladies on the team conducted classes in sewing and cosmetology, and others worked with the children at the Emanuel daycare facility.  Also, several ministry visits were made on behalf of the church, and members of the team gave numerous testimonies, taught Sunday School classes, preached in the Sunday worship services, staged a puppet show and sang special music.
Team members included Evie Brewster, Ferne Cox, Alan Craddock, Tammy Craddock, Troy Dittman, Don Hale, Carol Harner, Bradley Harris, Andy Johnston, Jim Learn, Janice Mathisen, Priscilla Medina, Bill Pletcher, Vonda Saccone, Ron Thomas, Paul Tomazin (construction chief), Pat Schaeffer and Pastor Jerry Schaeffer (team leader).
