The Gospel is Under Attack

Posted on Monday, May 14 2012 in Pastor's Corner
NEVER  has the Gospel been under any greater attack than it is today. Never, also, has the church been under any stronger assault than now.

Those are among the reasons we are doing the two current preaching series from the Riverbend pulpit. Hopefully, both of these crucial studies are answering questions that may be plaguing many of us. My prayerful desire is that our moorings will be so riveted into Truth that we are able to stand firm against the enemy’s constant barrage of attempts to derail the Truth.

A quick synopsis of the two series:
  • The Doctrines of Grace: An Intense Study of Salvation (Sundays) ... This is a refresher course, of sorts. But it’s deeper than that. It focuses on the grace principles that Jesus and His apostles taught so vividly in the First Century.
  • Church Killers (Wednesdays) ... Satan has many ways of attempting to shame and disgrace the Bride of Christ—His church. Our adversary is sometimes subtle and sneaky in his approach, and even strong Christians can be deceived into believing falsely and eventually behaving unbiblically. This series points out some of his methods.
NOTE:  If you happen to miss a part of either series, be certain to view it on GraceWorx.com. Sermons are usually posted on that website within a couple of days after they are preached.

Happy Mother's Day

Posted on Thursday, May 10 2012 in Pastor's Corner
PROBABLY NO PERSON on earth should be more honored by a family than a mother who seeks to raise her children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

As we approach Mother's Day (May 13), I encourage you to make this holiday a special time in your mother's life. If you live with or near your mother, give her some extra time on or around this holiday. Do something special--perhaps something she would not expect.

If she lives in another area, be certain to contact her and express your love and gratitude directly to her.  If she is deceased, rekindle some fond memories. Maybe share some of the good times with other family members or friends.

Above all, express your gratitude to the Lord for the mother He gave you. Please note that I speak for the entire staff in wishing all Riverbend mothers a happy Mother's Day.

Upcoming Series

Posted on Tuesday, May 08 2012 in Pastor's Corner
IF YOU WANT to embed into your heart, mind and spirit some intense truths about the biblical Doctrines of Grace that we preach and teach at Riverbend, then don't miss the worship service on Mother's Day, May 13.

I will be starting a new eight-part series entitled The Doctrines of Grace: An Intense Study of Salvation. We will be taking the foundational Scripture we have taught a few times before on this vital topic and going even deeper into the grace principles that were taught so carefully and vividly by Jesus and His apostles in the First Century.

I am praying that God will take this series and use it to glorify Himself while blessing us with a new assurance of the rich truths these doctrines contain. I am also praying that you will be present so that you can see how intrinsically and emphatically God's Word explains and fortifies these doctrines.

See you Sunday, the Lord willing.

Prayer

Posted on Tuesday, May 01 2012 in Pastor's Corner
PRAYER is all about God. If you have been at Riverbend for any length of time, you have heard me say that from the pulpit.

Prayer is God’s means to an end. It’s one of the ways He involves us in what He is doing, and we are blessed when He is glorified in our submissiveness to Him through praying.

Are you a prayer warrior? Are you following the mandates of our Lord  to commune with Him regularly  through prayer?

If so, praise the Lord!  If not, shame on you.  Make it a practice several times a day to pause and reflect on the greatness of God and the goodness He provides you.  In short, pray without ceasing (1 Thes. 5:17).

Riverbend Academy

Posted on Tuesday, April 24 2012 in Pastor's Corner
Here's an item for your permanent prayer list:  Riverbend Academy.

All Riverbend members should be praying regularly for the students, faculty and staff at the Academy. Our prayer should be that God is glorified in every thing that happens at the Academy—in the classroom, on field trips, in the lab, on the athletic field, during interaction among the students and in the hearts and minds of all involved.

Comparative test scores prove that Riverbend Academy has become one of the top schools in the area. The education provided is not just giving young people a chance to succeed in life but is offering an opportunity for its students to become Bible-solid Christian leaders with a proper biblical worldview.

So in your prayer times, please keep Riverbend Academy—one of our church's major ministries—before the Lord.

Missions – Above and Beyond

Posted on Monday, April 16 2012 in Pastor's Corner
IT  EXCITES  Marki and me when we hear reports from various Riverbend mission teams. It is a great, reaffirming joy to learn how the Lord used our members, both individually and corporately, during a specific missions venture.

All praise to the Lord for the thousands of people around the world who have been impacted in one way or another by the Above & Beyond missions ministry.  We’ll never really know, this side of heaven, how many people have been saved from God’s judgment because of this very vital ministry of our church.

How many of these new converts have gone on to proclaim the truth to others? How many have become preachers or missionaries?  Answers to those questions, if we knew them, would likely shock our imaginations.

Members of our college ministry, CrossRoads, recently returned from a successful trip to England—successful because they ministered the gospel to hundreds of attentive ears.
We have at least three other mission trips this calendar year-—two to Honduras (June 16-25 and Sept. 22-Oct. 1) and one to Romania (July 30-Aug. 13).

Let’s keep these trips saturated with advanced prayer. Then let’s expect some great reports when our people return.

Easter

Posted on Thursday, April 05 2012 in Pastor's Corner
EASTER should be the greatest “holy day” (or holiday, as the term has evolved over the years) for every true Christian.

The resurrection on that day 2,000 years ago is the defining moment of Christianity. In fact, it is the most significant event in all of history.

It was on that day that Jesus validated and put the exclamation point on His deity. As God, He came  to earth in the form of man. He lived a perfect life and then shed His sinless blood on a cruel cross so that you and I, contaminated by our sin, might be spared what we justly deserve-—hell and eternal separation from God.

That’s what we celebrate on Easter-—our risen Lord.  Hallelujah!

Men's Shepherding Group

Posted on Monday, March 26 2012 in Pastor's Corner
IT   IS   VERY  exciting  to  pause and reflect about the Lord’s blessings on the Riverbend ministry we call the Men’s Shepherding Group.

We began this ministry in November 2008 with 24 men, including four pastors who had a desire to mentor other men. Now we have expanded to 55 men, including six of our pastors.

Our desire from the start was to build a deeper solidarity in the men of our church—men who would stand for Truth, who would fight the enemy’s attempts to bring false doctrine into our church, who would seek to recognize budding problems among members and head them off.

I believe the Lord has answered our prayers, as all of these areas have shown measurable progress. I believe the Lord will continue to grow the original group of “shepherds,” if you will, into a deeper consecration with Him and a deeper loyalty to Him and His church.  I believe, too, that the additional men being mentored will continue to enhance the ministries at Riverbend  beyond our imaginations.

If you already haven’t done so, please put the Men’s Shepherding Group on your personal prayer list. Pray that God will provide direction for these men to become more godly in leading their families and in leading the church.

Urgency: Family Foundations

Posted on Monday, March 05 2012 in Pastor's Corner
ONLY  A  FEW  DAYS  remain

for purchasing advance tickets for the March 16-17 Family Foundations Conference at Riverbend.

The gentleman who is coming to be with us, Dr. Alex Chediak, is becoming a respected theologian in educational circles. He has been trained well and now he is training others well.

If you want the best for your children (or grandchildren) as they continue their education, then you want to be present. Our staff has planned this conference to be encouraging, challenging and enlightening.

So don’t hesitate in getting those tickets.  I can promise that the fellowship with other Riverbenders that weekend will be special, too.

The Power of Prayer

Posted on Thursday, February 23 2012 in Pastor's Corner
HOW FAITHFUL IS your prayer life?  Do you pray “without ceasing,” as the Bible instructs? Do you stay in an attitude of communion with God? Do you pray with an expectancy that God will answer—in a way that glorifies Himself and is best for you, others or the situation? Do you praise Him for His answer?

It’s good for us to examine ourselves to insure that we’re in the faith. But we should also check how we practice faith with our prayers. We are to be obedient, diligent and faithful in prayer, as James tells us in the New Testament. Faith, James says, produces great results.

Let’s not just do lip-service; let’s be certain we exercise faith.

Family Foundations

Posted on Tuesday, February 07 2012 in Pastor's Corner
IT  IS  ONLY about five weeks before we gather as a church (and hopefully as a community) for some special strategic training that we all need embedded in our hearts.

It has to do with the future. It has to do with investing our lives into the lives of our young people. It has to do with seeing that these young people are enlightened about what lies ahead for them. It has to do with encouraging parents and grandparents to be diligent in continually providing biblical direction for the challenges these youth will face in adulthood.

That’s why we have planned the Family Foundations Conference for March 16-17.  Plan to attend; your family will be blessed.

Super Sunday

Posted on Thursday, January 26 2012 in Pastor's Corner
FEBRUARY  5  is “Super Sunday” at Riverbend. It has nothing to do with the Super Bowl that evening, except that we borrowed part of that name to emphasize that we are hoping for a super attendance that day in both Bible Fellowship Groups and worship.

We are encouraging all members to be here but really to do more than that. To have a super attendance, we should all follow the mandate in Scripture and bring at least one guest to the House of the Lord.

As the master said to the servant in one of Jesus’ parables (Luke 14:23): “Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.”

Let’s do it!

Serving Our Lord in 2012

Posted on Sunday, January 01 2012 in Pastor's Corner
CHRISTMAS came and went quickly, didn’t it? The New Year is now in full swing, and our staff has been working diligently toward making 2012 a great year of service to our Lord through ministry.

May we all be resolved as a congregation, as the hymn says, “no longer to linger.” May we seek the  Lord like never before. May we dig deeper for both spiritual and physical energy to combat the wiles of our arch enemy. May we become  more embedded in the Scripture. May our lives reflect the rich doctrinal truths of God’s Word.  May we all become greater prayer soldiers.

And may it all be to the glory of our great God!

Remember the Reason!

Posted on Thursday, December 15 2011 in Pastor's Corner
CHRISTMAS is always one of the most joyous times of the year. It's a time for family togetherness, great memories, tasty food, festive music, enjoying colorful decorations, exchanging gifts, doing for others and especially worshipping our glorious Savior.

That final phrase is the one Marki and I want to emphasize to all Riverbend members. It would be easy to get caught up in all the excitement and forget the real reason for it all.  As believers, and particularly Riverbend believers, let's remember the reason for the Christ-mas season ... and help others to remember it, as well.

Chest of Joash

Posted on Monday, December 05 2011 in Pastor's Corner
IT DOESN’T seem like it has been 11 years since Marki and I sat on the front row in the Worship Center one Sunday and watched for the first time the people of Riverbend drop their offerings into the wooden chest in front of the pulpit.

We can remember tears of joy, excitement and gratitude that flowed from our eyes. But what really was special were the tears we saw flowing from so many of our members.

As a church, we had made a real commitment to missions, and the Chest of Joash march that day seemed to seal it.

We have taken almost those same seats every year since, and there’s still an heartfelt emotional joy to it.

May it continue on Dec. 4.

What a Blessed Time of Year!

Posted on Tuesday, November 15 2011 in Pastor's Corner
WOW!  CAN  YOU  believe it? Thanksgiving is staring us in the face.

What a blessed time of the year. It is a time that our government many years ago set aside so that Americans can pause and reflect on the mercy and grace of Almighty God to our nation.

It used to be taught in the schools that our forefathers came to what they called “the new world” so they could establish religious freedom and biblically worship our heavenly Father. Now we seldom hear that.

As we gather with family and friends during the Thanksgiving season, let’s be the leaders in reminding everyone of God’s sustaining goodness to us.

As You Did It to One of the Least of These My Brothers

Posted on Tuesday, November 08 2011 in Pastor's Corner
ATTENTION, Riverbend: We have a great opportunity this month to minister in the name of Christ. As one of the larger churches in the area, we should be leading the way in reaching beyond our walls and into the world around us.

With the economic times the way they are, many people are struggling. The future for them may be a really big question mark.

Let’s all pledge to assist them as we can — giving of ourselves and our resources to help them get through this. Let’s provide ample food for people to have a decent Thanksgiving. Let’s send those shoeboxes to kids overseas.

Let’s minister in the name of Jesus.

Family Foundations

Posted on Thursday, October 20 2011 in Pastor's Corner
WHY HAVE a family conference?, some may ask.  Well, contrary to public opinion, the world’s most attacked entity is not the government, not the public school system, not the labor unions, not even the church.

No, it is the home—the family, the institution God established first.

If the enemy can destroy the home, all other elements of society will eventually fall with it.

Riverbend desires to use God’s ways to help our families grow stronger in Biblical principles and be better equipped to combat the enemy. As I’ve said in the pulpit, our church will never rise above our families.

A family conference? ... that’s why
