The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

Series: Road to the Resurrection Scripture: John 18:1–40

In John 18, we witness the sobering reality of Jesus betrayed, arrested, and led toward the cross according to the sovereign plan of God. From Judas’ betrayal to Peter’s denial, this chapter exposes both the darkness of sin and the unwavering resolve of Christ to fulfill the Father’s will.

Jesus stands with divine authority even as He is surrounded by soldiers, declaring “I am” and demonstrating that no power can overtake Him apart from His willing surrender. Though unlawfully tried and falsely accused, He remains steadfast, committed to drinking the cup of God’s wrath for the salvation of His people.

As religious leaders and Roman authorities reject the sinless Son of God, we are confronted with the depth of human blindness and rebellion. Yet even in injustice, God’s perfect plan is advancing, as Christ willingly endures suffering to accomplish redemption.

The exchange of Barabbas for Jesus provides a vivid picture of the gospel—where the guilty go free and the innocent is condemned in their place. This passage calls us to see ourselves, to behold Christ, and to respond in repentance, faith, and worship.
