Christ, the Ark of Refuge in the Flood of Judgment

1 Peter 3:18–22 is one of the most difficult passages in the New Testament. Peter wrestles with Christ’s suffering, His victory over sin and death, Noah and the flood, the “spirits in prison,” and the meaning of baptism. Yet beneath all the difficult questions is a clear and powerful message: Jesus Christ is the ark of salvation for sinners facing the judgment of God.

In this sermon, we explore why Christ suffered for the unrighteous, how His resurrection demonstrates His victory, what Peter means by Christ proclaiming to the “spirits in prison,” and how Noah’s salvation through the flood points us to the significance of Christian baptism.

Most importantly, Peter’s message calls us to examine the one question that ultimately matters: Have you boarded the ark of Christ?

Those who trust in Christ can face suffering and even the coming judgment with confidence, because Christ has conquered sin, death, and every spiritual enemy. Salvation is not found in the waters of baptism, but in Christ Himself—the One to whom baptism points.
